Purpose

The BSBA specialization in accounting is accredited by theAACSB International-The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The undergraduate curriculum for a specialization in accounting is designed for the student who wants to prepare for a career as a professional accountant with industry, government, or nonprofit organizations or for public accounting practice as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Opportunities exist to work in such specialized areas as auditing, financial reporting, cost and managerial accounting, taxation, and information systems consulting.

BSBA General Degree Requirements

Students completing the accounting specialization must completeUniversity,general degree,admission core, andbusiness corerequirements for the BSBA degree, includingadmission to the BSBA program. For students specializing in accounting, ECON 3110is recommended to fill the professional core requirements. Those planning to take the CPA examination are advised to take LEGS 4010rather than LEGS 3010as part of the professional core.

Admission to the Accounting Specialization

Students who plan to obtain the BSBA degree with an accounting specialization should enroll in the pre-accounting program within the college. To enroll in upper-level accounting classes and gain admission to the specialization, a student must:

  • Complete ACCT 2210and ACCT 2220with a grade of “C” or better in each;
  • Complete a minimum of 51 semester hours of University credit;
  • Attain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.6, including grades from all universities and colleges attended.

A grade of “C” or better must be earned in each course taken to satisfy requirements of the Accounting specialization.

  • ACCT 3310 - Intermediate Managerial Accounting
  • ACCT 3410 - Income Taxation
  • ACCT 4220 - Intermediate Financial Accounting II
  • ACCT 4510 - Auditing I
  • ACCT 4600 - Accounting Information Systems
  • One course from any 3000 or 4000 level ACCT courses (except ACCT 4890) Contact Hours: 3

(Additional hours needed to reach 122 hours) and/or optional additional specialization or minor

BSBA Admission

(Must be met by 45 Hours)

BSBA admission requirements are:

  1. Completion of MATH 1260, or BA 1600, or MATH 1310, or both MATH 1340and MATH 1350with a C or higher
  2. minimum 12 BGSU hours that count toward the degree;
  3. minimum 2.50 BGSU cumulative GPA;
  4. completion of four or more of the following courses with at least a C within 45 credit hours-ACCT 2210, ACCT 2220, ECON 2020, ECON 2030, BA 2030, BA 2110, BA 2120, IS 2000. However, all of the courses in the admission core must be completed
    # MATH requirement also satisfies Quantitative Literacy requirement

Admission decisions are made three times each year. All pre-business students with 45 hours toward the degree are reviewed for admission.

BGSU students planning on transferring to the BSBA program must apply for College entrance and pre-business status within 45 hours toward the degree or, in the case that 45 or more hours are transferred from another institution, upon completion of 12 BGSU hours toward the degree.

To be admitted to the Accounting program, a student must:

  1. Attain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.6 including grads from all universities and colleges attended;
  2. Complete a minimum of 51 semester hours of University credit
  3. Complete ACCT 2210and ACCT 2220with a grade of “C” or better in each

NOTE: BSBA admission is not a requirement for initial admission to the Accounting program but is required for degree completion. To apply to the Accounting program, go to the AMIS Department.

NOTES:

Students who do not achieve BSBA admission in the admission review are placed on conditional standing for one semester or 15 credit hours to satisfy BSBA admission requirements. Pre-business students on conditional standing may take 3000-level business courses, subject to completion of prerequisites, but may not take 4000-level business courses.

Students who do not achieve BSBA admission after the conditional semester will not be permitted to take 3000-or 4000-level business courses and must pursue other degree programs offered at BGSU or another institution.

  • ECON 2000 cannot be used to satisfy specialization or elective requirements.
  • BIZX 4000 must be completed at BGSU.

Internships are highly encouraged as they do not only provide a way to bridge the classroom material to the practice, they lead to potential future employment with the company.
